Supervision
This SOP outlines supervision requirements for RBTs and BCBA trainees in compliance with BACB standards.
BACB Compliance Requirements
Minimum Supervision Hours
- RBTs must receive supervision for at least 5% of hours worked
- Supervision must be provided by a qualified BCBA
- BCBAs must provide supervision only within their areas of competence
Supervision Eligibility
Supervisors must:
- Meet BACB supervision eligibility requirements
- Provide proof of eligibility to supervisees
- Abide by the BACB Professional and Ethical Compliance Code
RBT Supervision
Ongoing Supervision Structure

Team Meetings
- BCBA-led team meetings are specific to each client “Hive”
- Format determined by treating BCBA (Zoom, in-person, etc.)
- Purpose: team communication and collaboration regarding clients
Important: If a bi-weekly 30-minute meeting runs over, it can convert to a monthly 1-hour meeting if everyone’s schedule allows. Otherwise, time exceeding the allotment is not reimbursed.

BCBA Trainee Supervision
Experience Activities
Qualifying activities include:
- Conducting assessment activities related to behavioral interventions
- Designing, implementing, and monitoring behavior analysis programs
- Overseeing implementation of behavior analysis programs by others
- Training, designing behavioral systems, and performance management
- Attending planning meetings, researching literature, and program discussions
Note: Direct implementation of behavioral programs may not count for more than 50% of accrued experience hours.
Non-Qualifying Activities
- Meetings with little or no behavior analytic content
- Interventions not based in behavior analysis
- Non-behavior analytic administrative activities
- Activities not directly related to behavior analysis
Trainee Requirements
- Complete Pre-Experience Checklist per BACB.com before starting
- Begin experience only after starting qualifying coursework
- Attend professional meetings (IEPs, school meetings, case conferences, parent meetings)
- Stay current on BACB experience standards
- Maintain adequate and timely documentation
Supervisor Responsibilities
- Provide documented performance feedback on:
- Progress toward training objectives
- Specific areas of adequate/inadequate progress
- Client interactions
- Sign Monthly and Final Experience Verification Forms when hours are completed satisfactorily
- Withhold signature when:
- Professional meetings are missed
- Documentation/reports are inadequate or untimely
- Assigned tasks are late or incomplete

Supervisee Self-Assessment
New RBTs and trainees complete a self-assessment checklist covering:
- Core competencies
- Skills requiring development
- Training needs

Performance Feedback
Feedback Requirements
- Ongoing documented feedback required per BACB Code sections 5.05 and 5.06
- Must address progress toward stated training objectives
- Include specific areas of strength and areas needing improvement
Annual Reviews
- All employees receive an annual review at their hire anniversary
- RBTs: Can bill 30 minutes of indirect time for annual review form
- BCBAs: Can bill 1 hour of indirect time for annual review form
- Reviews assess performance, recognize accomplishments, and set future goals
Termination of Supervision
Valid Reasons for Termination
- Experience hours completed satisfactorily
- Progress not made after 3 instances of corrective feedback
- Egregious violations of BACB Professional and Ethical Compliance Code
Notice Requirements
- Either party may terminate with 14 days advance written notice
- Document reason for termination
- Ensure proper transition of supervisory responsibilities
Confidentiality
Both supervisor and supervisee must:
- Keep all client information confidential (medical, clinical, etc.)
- Ensure clients have consented to observation and information sharing
- Protect supervision time and space from interruptions
- Abide by HIPAA requirements
